Bear Essentials™ is an opportunity to get to know local, interstate and international bears, cubs and admirers. It’s a way of participating in our community and it’s a lot of fun.
If you’ve been to a Bear Essentials™ “run” before, you’ll already know what to expect!
Many local Sydneysiders take the whole week off work just so they can attend all the Bear Essentials™ events, or hook up with international travellers visiting Sydney. Of course, a few of us take a few extra days as well, because we need to recover!
Don’t miss Friday night bears at Kinselas and Sunday Bears at the Bank will also take place, and of course parties such as Underbear, Toga and the popular Wet Furs pool party.
Here are the hotels we recommend that have good reviews and keep you close to all the action

If you want to be close to the main attractions and a stones trow from the gay nightlife, the CBD (Central Business District) is the ideal location and home to the city’s best hotels.
The traditional centre of queer life has been Oxford Street in Darlinghurst. It is still one of the most popular strips at night for partying.
Nearby Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay have become the home to the smart party set.
North Bondi is home to the popular gay beach. Head inland a bit and you come to trendy Newtown.
Highlights from Bear Essentials Sydney
Sydney has several gay districts, however the Central Business District offers the most convenient places to stay, close to the bars, clubs and tourists attractions of the city. Sydney city centre (comprising Pyrmont, Circular Quay, The Rocks and the Central Business District) is relatively compact and can be explored on foot or by public transport, ride sharing and taxi.
For clubbing and nightlife, Oxford Street, Darlinghurst/Surry Hills is still the heart of gay Sydney. Most of the hotels we have selected are close to these districts. Newtown, Erskineville and Glebe are worthy of a visit. These villages have great communities, cafes, pubs and eateries. Kings Cross/Potts Point area aslo offers great gay-friendly dining options.
